"The Georgians, Genealogies of Pioneer Settlers" by Jeannette Holland Austin, pages 377-378. Several Westers came to Georgia from Edgecomb and Nash
Counties, in North Carolina. Among them were William Wester, to Washington
Co. in 1784, and Elias Wester to Tatnall Co., in 1784, and Elias Wester to
Tatnall Co., in 1802. Arthur Wester was a resident of Nash Co., N.C.,
about this time (1792), as was Mathew Wester. Arthur Wester may have come
to Georgia, but Mathew Wester died in Nash County, N.C., about 1790. These
people may have been brothers of John Wester, but it has not been proven,
as of yet. The information concerning the Wester family was obtained in
September of 1998, from the book, "The Georgians: Genealogies of Pioneer
Settlers", Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1984, by Jeanette

It is not known who the immigrant Hagerty was, but according to "family tradition", as related by Louis Finlay in his unpublished manuscript on the Wm. Hagerty family, our line came from the County of Londonderry, Ireland. In 1762, Wm. Hagerty and wife, Sarah, of Anson Co., North Carolina, sold to Thomas Rutledge of Augusta County, Virginia, for five shillings, 300 acres of land in Anson Co., North Carolina. There is no further record of Wm. Hagerty until 1785, when records show that Sarah B. Hagerty, widow, moved to Washington County, Georgia, and received a Citizen's headright Grant of land near the land of Samuel Townsend. O'Hegarty Coat of Arms = Argent an oaktree eradicated proper, on a chief gules three birds of the first beaked and legged sable. Crest: An arm in armour embowed the hand grasping a scymitar all proper. O'HEGARTY. (The prefix O, discarded during the period of Gaelic submergence, has not been resumed in modern times except in very few cases.) The Hegarty sept originated in the borders of counties Donegal and Derry and the Hegartys of County Cork are a branch of this sept. The O'Hegartys were prominent as "Wild Geese". Hegarty, sometimes O'Hegarty but seldom Haggerty in Ireland (a form of the name found among Irish-Americans), is in Irish O' hEigceartaigh (eigceartach means unjust). Though now associated principally with Co. Cork, the Hegartys of Munster are in fact a branch of the main O'Hegarty sept of the Cinel Eoghain which was located on the borders of the present counties of Donegal and Derry. In the fourteenth century the barony of Loughinsholin (Co. Derry) was their principal habitat; in the seventeenth they were more numerous in Tirkeeran (Co. Derry) and Inishowen (Co. Donegal) in the north, and in the baronies of Barrymore and Carbery West in Co. Cork. As is usually the case the present representatives of the sept are to be found in their traditional homeland and are today most numerous in Counties Cork, Donegal and Derry. The Ulster sept were subfeudatory to O'Neill: Maolmuire O'Hegarty fell at Kinsale in O'Neill's army. The 1691 attainders of O'Hegartys relate to those of Ulster. The records of persecuted priests in the seventeenth century also indicate the Ulster character of the sept up till modern times. The name appears very frequently in the annals of the Irish brigades and among those who distinguished themselves particularly in this field of action was Lt. Col. Hegarty of Lally's Regiment, who for his services was rewarded in 1747 by Louis XV of France, while Peter O'Hegarty was made Governor of the Isle of Bourbon. Another Irish Hegarty in eighteenth century France, Daniel O'Hegarty, shipbuilder of Dunkirk, a Catholic, strange as this seems to us now, founded the first Freemason lodge in that country in 1721. According to Dr. Richard Hayes the main object of these lodges, which were largely composed of Jacobite exiles, was the restoration of the house of Stuart. In recent times the name has been less distinguished, though several Hegartys were prominent in the struggle for Irish Independence 1916-1921; of these P.S. O'Hegarty (1879-1955), who was an author of repute, is the best known. The place name Hegarty's Rock at Killygarvan near Lough Swilly commemorates the barbarous and treacherous murder of Father James Hegarty there in 1715.
